My background is similar in the sense of growing up in a conservative family and finally breaking free. For me what did it was race and a growing abhorrence for doctrinaire non-thinking.

In my old town, the developers were taking over the democratic party. We looked long and hard at forming a third party. The US political system is set up in such a way as to make third parties next to impossible.

So we end up as a nation, as many others have said, with a two party system over social issues and a single party system controlling the economy. But since it's only a two party system on social issues there's an ongoing battle for the center. Hence loads of compromises to control the center. Right now the Repugs seem unwilling to compromise leaving Obama in firm control while compromising himself.

What we did in our small town was take over the Democratic party. We had the numbers and won on a grass roots level; i.e. primaries. There are about 147 towns in CT and that town has by far the most liberal (socialistic?) Democratic town committee, at least last time I looked.

Local activism can work.
