My best shortcut is having someone else to clear the table and do the dishes. As long as I've got that, the cooking part doesn't seem to be as much of hassle

I agree completely! I don't mind cooking in the least. But in my house if the dishes aren't done, since we don't have a dishwasher or many cooking utensils, I have wash dishes and clear up the mess before I can even START cooking. That really squelches the creative urge. By the time I've done that, I'm in such a bad mood that I'm not going to cook :-)
