My contention is that both of those are more likely than the Rams' being able to do anything w/ say 8 seconds left on the clock, so why tempt fate and risk losing the ball or the clock before even getting a chance to kick.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the mindset of the coach who is so paranoid he can't risk kicking off to the Rams, but is plenty comfortable giving his team 3 chances to mishandle the ball/clock/game before trying to kick.
