My dad took good care of my mom before she died in December 2007.
I moved in with my dad, to care for him, for 5 years before he died
in 2015. He needed 24-hour care for the last 3 years of his life.

Shortly after he passed I made sure to get a couple of LTC policies for myself.
I cannot expect any of my children to give up 5+ years of their lives to care
for me although they have often told me they would make sure I lived with one
of them. It can become so taxing that you lose yourself in the quest to never
have a parent live in a nursing or continuing care home.

I focused on a policy that is only for home health care (in its many forms) and
an additional one that is for assisted living, nursing home or dementia care
plus it has an added daily home health care bonus of $100/day that I can tap
into along with the first policy.

Thankfully I can afford such policies but I did get mine 15 years before my
parents did and theirs was with the only LTC company that had major financial
problems and had government intervention. It was not a good situation for them.
I have a stable company and good coverage. I am very grateful for that.
