My DW will turn 70.5 on December 9, 2011. Reading the Schwab info that is addressed to her, they state, "You must schedule your RMD no later than December 1, 2011, to allow adequate time for us to complete your RMD by December 31, 2011." Sounds like a pretty tight schedule for her. (Since I'm six months older I don't have a problem like that.

I suspect that you've left out part of rhe message. Schwab may need the lead time to schedule the first RMD if she wants the RMD paid this year. Elsewhere they may state that she has until April 1, 2012 to take her first distribution.

I don't know why Schwab would need so much lead time, but they are free to set their own internal processing rules.
