my mom... though called herself an "ethical Christian," by which she meant that she celebrated the teachings of Christ but not the magical mythology part.

Sounds like she was a Jeffersonian Christian. Thomas Jefferson gleaned the gospels to create a bible that excludes the miracles and such.

I've always considered Jesus to have Buddhist beliefs. There's a book called The Aquarian Gospel that attempts to explain the years of Jesus's life that are missing from the bible. It describes his traveling to the East and being exposed to Eastern religions.

I think people make too much of being aligned with one religion or another. When it comes to it, I think there are more similarities than differences regarding religious beliefs. I think people should do what works for them.
