My mother used to say that my grandfather (who never worked a day in his life) depending on his wife (grandma) to eke out a living for the family, that he was living "af kest" or something like that. I can't seem to find that expression anywhere by googling, and no one else in my family speaks Yiddish (and I remember just a bit.

I found one place that indicates the meaning "at pleasure", and another that says "receiving room and board at in-laws".

So basically, a free loader, as you described him.
