My parents troop down to The Home State every year in September for the Family Reunion.

Waitaminute, who schedules an annual family reunion after the school year starts?

That automatically almost eliminates families with school-aged children if they aren't local. It certainly makes it a huge hassle for them and at least a minor pain for the local families with kids.

In my family we have always done it some time in the summer because the out of town relatives - whether 200 or 2000 miles - who have schoolkids would answer "no" if not "heck no" to something like that during the school year.

To people who say "it's only ONE DAY" they are forgetting about driving a day (or more) each way, and if you are going all that way wouldn't you like the option of adding another day or three to see more people/sites/cool stuff? Not possible if you're trying to jam it in a 3 day weekend.
