My view of the online world indicates that in theory, these board discussions should foster objective, topical discussions. After all, we don't know each other, we don't really have presubscribed notions of what each other looks like, where we come from, whether we speak with an accent, etc. - in short, there should be less prejudice on the Internet.

I've learned the reality is quite different. Posters are real human beings who, for better or worse, bring along their own personal baggage, good and bad, when they decide to take the trip together.

To state the obvious, I can't control what people write, only how I choose to respond. I think it's a safer bet to first examine the reasons for your own response before attempting to judge the intent of the poster. We all know the downside of trying to communicate in the absence of verbal cues and body language, so most learn to deal with it.

With the passing of time, there's a natural evolution for topical discussion boards. They thrive on informative, civil and intelligent discussion and wither in the absence of such.
