My wife and I are in our early forties and have been retired about two years now. We bought some land and are homeschooling our youngest child, building a house ourselves, doing loads of landscaping, digging several fishing ponds, putting in a three hole golf course... I may be dead before I get the greens right! I'm sure we're in better health than we've been in since highschool and completly devoid of stress (other than the greens.)
Everyone is different, but buying land was the best thing we ever did. It keeps us occupied and gives us a daily dose of accomplishment. When we get sick of working on the place we hop a plane for the Islands or wherever - My wife still sings the theme song from "Green Acres" every now and then, so we head to the city for a night of traffic and crowds - takes a few months before she longs for the city again.

I completely agree with something I read in one of the other responses about not watching TV - just say NO! When you have nothing that you absolutely HAVE to do, it is easy to become a drooling idiot in front of that thing. Whatever you do, do something - inactivity breeds depression.

best of luck,
