never once has a person told me "he really is a shady character, but I hired him anyway, giving him my life savings and personal information"

I had a financial manager assigned to me at TIAA. He wanted to manage 40 years of retirement money for me. I met with him. I wouldn't call him "shady," but I would, and did, call him relatively inexperienced and biased toward selling me unnecessarily expensive TIAA funds and such. I complained and they assigned me another guy. This guy was more experienced but equally biased toward selling me TIAA services and funds I didn't want. So I moved everything to Schwab, where I get some (free) advice from time to time when I ask for it and manage everything myself. I trust me. (For good reason. I've put in my 10K hours of investment learning and practice over the past 25 years.)
