Engineering your Retirement: Retirement Planning for Technology Professionals by Mike Golio may be slanted towards engineers, but it is an excellent book for anyone with an interest in a fulfilling and financially secure retirement. This small book (181 pages) is crammed with information about the “why” and “how” to get started down the path towards a rewarding retirement as well as “what to do” once you get there.

Dr. Golio covers the landscape – the importance of saving even if you are bringing the big bucks, budgeting, health care if you retire early (and other types of insurance), types of investment vehicles (he covers everything including commodities, ETFs, rental properties), the importance of allocation/diversity, and tax issues. He also carefully describes the various ways to project what your retirement financial needs in the future may be, so that you have a goal to strive for. He describes the pluses and minuses of the various methodologies.

There are formulas for those that want to run their own “what-if” scenarios, but Dr. Golio's book read fine even if you don't understand the formulas – he explains the way the formulas work very well.

He also has many references and URLs for further study. It isn't cheap - $34.95 at Amazon,

though if you are a member of IEEE, there is a special code on Dr. Golio's web site that gets you 20% off. The book is put out by IEEE with a past president of IEEE doing the technical review.

The Table of Contents is available on Dr. Golio's website
www.golio.net/My_Homepage_Files/Page1.html
and many of the URLs listed in the book are available as well.

I definitely recommend this book as high on content and low on fluff. You might ask your local library to get a copy.
