It is easy to get caught up in the headlines surrounding Facebook, both positive and negative. In this news round up, we will be taking a different type of look into some news around Facebook you may have missed. It isn't the catchy attention grabbing headline, rather it is a look into what Facebook product and development teams are doing inside the business to build a better platform and user experience.

Facebook's F8 developer conference. What started off as a hackathon back in 2007 is coming back as a developer conference. This year's headline is the Messenger API for Instagram being available for all developers to use in their code. In layman's terms businesses can now integrate Instagram's messaging with their applications and workflows. other topics are greater support for businesses on Facebook, building an AR (Advanced reality) developer community, and more!

Experimenting with hiding like counts on Instagram and Facebook is a reality for those who are interested in using the new feature. It first was piloted on Instagram to give users more control over their user experience. It is part of a larger change to give folks control of what they see and share on feeds and reducing exposure to offensive material.

For some time Facebook and its apps have been searching for ways to combat misinformation. For pages that repeatedly share false claims or information, a notification appears allowing the user to make the choice to either go back or proceed. It seems like Facebook is beginning to find ways to navigate touchy subjects like COVID-19, vaccines, climate change, elections, and other controversial topics while giving users more flexibility to follow and engage. However, sharing misinformation still carries penalties in the form of reduced post distribution for offenders. Some of this has been in place, but has most recently expanded to user accounts as well.

Facebook and its properties are also taking stronger steps to combat coordinated influence operations. Most recently, Facebook is disclosing more information on its enforcements against influence operations in a threat report covering from 2017 through 2020. Over the years, Facebook has publicized these operations as they happen, but the report is a deeper retrospective capturing many more of their efforts over the timespan.

More support is on the way for professionals with additional updates to Insight tools. The goal is to better help creators and businesses better understand their performance on Instagram. The data for these key metrics help makers understand their impact and reach with each interaction. For Reels, "new metrics including Plays, Accounts Reached, Likes, Comments, Saves, and Shares." For Live, metrics include "Accounts Reached, Peak Concurrent Viewers, Comments, and Shares."

Wow, a real conversation with Mark Zuckerberg! Most times we get to see or hear from Mark he is on an investor call, or sitting behind a desk in front of Congress. get to hear some open conversation around everything from smoking meats and Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce to AR/VR.
