NJ has a homesteader exemption that you file with your state income tax.

At least it did when I lived there. But that is one of the things that gets into the balance the budget negotiation every year. Its never a sure thing until the budget is balanced.

Another one in NJ to be aware of is the veterans exemption from property tax. Present your DD-214 to townhall, and your taxes get reduced a few hundred dollars every year. Not a lot compared to what you pay in property tax in NJ, but easy and little known. Usually you find out about it because some friend told you about it. Tax authorities do not promote it or publicize it. But it is the law.
