Looks like it's not just me that's nuts, or is being driven nuts by the Seagate drives. This thread has lots of links which I haven't yet read, but the gist of it is that there are some funky things going on with the 3TB seagate externals.

And then over on Amazon's reviews, some people have had problems. Several people using Windows have said there is a problem with drives over 2TB because they were using 4k blocks instead of 512 bytes, and thus it has problems with large file transfers.....or something like that.

I guess I tend to think of drives being like refrigerators these days, that you just plug them in and they work. Looks like it's all not quite that easy, though it still doesn't make sense to me the troubles I was hitting. Either way, it looks like I'm not alone.
