Not illegal but you just came upon an uninformed, doesn't care, employee. You get those at almost any store. It was probably just dumb luck you got him.

He should have just taken the unit and ship it to the factory for diagnosis. Had he taken the TV in the back to someone with knowledge they could see it wasn't a power surge issue.

I have never had a problem with Best Buy. Even though I get their warranty I've only had to use it on a printer and both times I walked out with a new printer. I have rarely needed an extended warrant for anything but a printer.
