Not surprisingly, you have to go back to 1999 to have a year where the stock underperformed at higher rate to S&P. Of course BRKB outperformed in 2000 by 35%+.

I suspect that the price underperformance in 99 was because everyone was running into tech stocks to chase the fortunes everyone else was seen making. Then when tech fell out of favor, B-H was a "no-risk safe" alternative.
