Having worked for the Swiss for 10 years, I can tell you this:

They're astute, and uncomprimising, calculating businessmen. They're also perfectionists. Novartis is cash-rich and blends the strengths of former Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. On the down-side, their management is still going through merger pains, and so is the entire international family of affiliates. Yet, another plus I forgot to mention: they are all workaholics back in Basle.

Next millenia? The company has positioned all its tentacles in genetic research companies and is preparing the field of organ transplants from genetically-adapted animals to humans. Demographics you were saying? After nuclear physics, electricity, air and space flight, and transistors and ICs, a new medicine based on genetic manipulation could well be the next technical revolution in human history. They seem to know this at Novartis. Buy their stock.
