Now I'm off to see what happened to Qwest,

Qwest took over US West, one of the regional Bell operating companies from the AT&T breakup of the early 80s. iirc, Qwest was able to avoid bankruptcy when the bubble popped due to US West's guaranteed profit from it's regulated local exchange business. Somewhere along the line, Qwest was then taken over by Century, a local exchange operator in Louisiana, and cell phone operator in a large part of the country. Century is now known as CenturyLink.
