For those looking into nursing home alternatives, some suggestions:

1. As noted, check out the government websites of nursing homes, and specifically the '5 Star' ranking of the ones you are considering

2. Have a look at the short list, nationally, of USNews 'Honor Roll' nursing homes.

3. See what the CNA's who are actually providing hands-on care are saying, in their own forums. While they won't name employer names, you can get an idea of their issues and frustrations.

4. After looking at #3, find out about actual coverage ratios, for instance at night and on weekends. Not their goals, but right then.

5. Take 30 minutes to learn some of the tell-tale giveaway signs of quality care.

6. Check out an Elder Abuse Attorney's website:
check the actual ownership of the home, and avoid any that are owned by corporations that are having persistent problems in their other homes.

7. Understand if the home is for-profit or non-profit (caregiving staff salaries, on average are higher in non-profits).

For more, including stay-at-home alternatives, especially for those with LTC insurance, check out the AARP and other forums.
