Ok, here is the answer folks.

Because there are now more than one registrar, you have to do whois as a two-step process.

First,

whois domain.com

Then, from the answer you get from that, take the whois server and tack it onto the whois request:

whois domain.com@whois.networksolutions.com

This will give you the full result. Note that you can't just do this to begin with, as you may need to use whois.register.com or some other whois server.

Note: some whois commands need a different syntax, do a 'man whois' to find the proper syntax if this does not work for you (the whois host may need to be added with some -option instead of an @-sign).
