OK, so the message on annuities is received loud and clear. :-)

This year we made some investments in the business which will allow us to post a loss. That would allow us to invest fully into the Roth which is good.

I agree, too, that the diversification into small cap stocks is wise; as a newbie I hadn't really looked at the capitalization spread of the portfolios. I've read elsewhere that small caps historically offer more volatility but better returns over the long run. Since my horizon is 20+ years I think I can safely weather the volatility.
