On the other hand, I somehow have difficulty believing that there’s a network of evildoers out there waiting for that phone call, text message, or email message to all start riots simultaneously. If this conspiracy existed, at least one of them would have blown it open by now, right?

It’s a self-organizing thing. People see the Floyd video on the internet, they see reports of protests and looting on TV in Minneapolis, someone posts in a local Facebook group or via Whatsapp that they should also have a demonstration in their city, a few thousand people show up, next day it’s 10 times as many, and some of them take the opportunity to loot.

There’s no grand conspiracy. It’s the viral nature of social networking aided by sensationalist TV coverage.
