1)I have been selected for promotion to the rank of Commander (Lieutenant Colonel equivilant for those unaccostumed to Navy ranks). I should promote 1 Aug 2011.

II) I have been slated to my own ship. I report in October 2011. I'll be the Executive Officer for 18 months and then I'll be the Commanding Officer for 18 months. It involves a move to San Diego, but it is a nearly new ship. I am very excited to have the opportunity to command a ship.

That is all.

Just to add, for those who might not know, Redneck is being extremely modest.

The promotion in rank is obviously great, but getting actual command of a ship is very very very VERY difficult and highly-coveted among line officers.

A ship command only goes to THE MOST HIGHLY QUALIFIED of naval officers.

Congratulations once again.

Congrats! Wow, you're officially Somebody!

SD is only a couple of hours from me (I was there last weekend for a wedding so I've got the mileage fresh in my mind) so let me know when you're here, and I'll take you and your family to lunch.

Congrats!!

Will you be at 32nd Street? Coronado?

I LOVED being in San Diego as a squid. There's sooo much to do, and a lot of places have military discounts.

32nd Street. Got to remember how to nail passing under the center of the Coronado bay bridge. I used to have the courses in and out of San Diego memorized.

Congrats! Let's hope you and your crew can make it to Key West some day where we have "Military Thursday" at our bar. Of course, there will be plenty of cold ones with your name on them.

That's wonderful! What a fantastic opportunity! Very happy for you and the whole family. And I'm sure it is well-deserved.

And hey, I am up in Burbank--maybe Fry and I can carpool down there to go to dinner or lunch or something. Whee!

Congratulations on the command. That's an enormous opportunity and reward for years of hard work in one package.

They don't put hundreds or even thousands of lives and billion dollar ships in to the hands of just anyone, after all. Good for you.

San Diego zoo has an amazing elephant breeding program and a huge collection of animals if that is at all your thing.
