Thin client is the worst possible system for current, mobile, wireless networks.

I agree completely. Large databases for example a map and driving directions would be downloaded like Mapquest. Smaller databases like contacts and agenda can be kept on the device and synchronized occasionally. This requires that only the new information is sent. Java apps can be brought over the network once and kept on the device if they are to be used frequently or discarded.
