One point = one dollar. Or, you could say one point = 100 cents, but that would be silly!

Can someone tell me why (or when) the word point begun to be used as a substitute for dollar? Has 1 point always been 1 dollar? Is a 1 point move on the NASDAQ index a 1 dollar move? I don't think so. So 1 point does not always mean 1 dollar, right? Does one point on the German stockmarket = 1 DM?
