One thing I have pondered from time to time is whether or not I would have kids, and if so, if I would share that myth with them. I'm more of the belief that we tell our kids these stories because we want so much for them to be true - we want our kids to live in a world where anything is possible and everything is magical, and feel obligated to shelter them from the colder, harsher "reality" that we have seen for ourselves. And while I can appreciate that, and probably would even more once I actually did spawn, I'm not sure I could tell them the traditional Santa Claus story knowing full well I'd have to retract it a few years later. Even if it did mean I wouldn't have a way to threaten them into good behaviour two months out of the year. :)

Hi Kilbia,

I think we do tell our kids these stories because we want to believe in them ourselves. Not the flying and the chimney hopping, but that someone knows who you are, can see your heart, and loves you. That's the 'magic' of Santa, I think. I've never had to retract the Santa stories I told, because there was always the truth there. "Sure, there is this man dressed up in red in all the malls. They aren't the REAL Santa. The real Santa is in all of us, when we do something kind for someone else. You can be a Santa, too."

It's a little different, but it never stopped my kids from believing in the flying and the chimney hopping when they were at the age that they wanted to believe it. I'm pretty sure my 16 year old STILL doesn't believe that her Mom bought all those Santa gifts. I'm TOO cheap!
