I'm sorry folks, but this thread is replaying in my mind, because I have seen the consequences.

First, let me say I pack my son's lunch 90% of the time. Or more. He is currently in 4th grade. 2 years ago I printed out the school menu each month. He would look it over and decide which days he wanted to buy. He would choose the days they offered a hot dog, or a grilled cheese sandwich or chicken nuggets.

These were always offered with a fruit cup, maybe a vegetable. (Okay, the fruit cup is fine, but if you can imagine what a $2.25 lunch can do to a vegetable you wouldn't eat it either).

Last year Michelle O's plan hit our school. My son goes to an A rated school in Florida (beats me, because the state and federal programs and testings have pretty much ruined a decent education), and most of the children would not qualify for free lunches.

But, I digress....Michelle came along and the hot dogs, grilled cheese and cheap chicken nuggets disappeared. Along came the chicken teriyaki bowls and a few other things. Now, let me ask you....for #2.25...what do you think can be made to taste better...Grilled Cheese or chicken teriyaki?

I have sat in the lunch room too many times to not know the answer to that question. Elementary children will eat the grilled cheese, the hot dog or the chicken nuggets. The $2.25 chicken teriyaki goes in the trash. The vegetables, other than perhaps the corn, goes in the trash.

However, we are saved. BECAUSE there is an a la carte bar. So, if your child does not want to take his lunch, or buy the new nonsense, and if you can afford it, your child can eat from there. Pizza, chicken nuggets (better quality than the free kind), but fries, pretzel bites, GatorAde, etc.,

REALLY, you took away a grilled cheese and a fruit serve chicken rice teriyaki??????????????? For $2.25?????? That will be gourmet and tasty!

You HAVE TO HAVE children in the current system to even begin to understand. I have a 30 year old, 27 year old and a 9 year old. I really understand. And, my youngest will most likely be in a private school...of traditional learnings....before he reaches middle school.

And don't get me started on the Common Core Math and Reading that might be coming our way. Federally sponsored. The state has already managed to ruin math...a beautiful subject until buearocrats get their hands on state level...

P.S. ...I don't know if this is county or state, but our school offers free breakfasts to all. Makes me ill, because most of the children partaking could buy lunch on the house once a year.
