OP, does your father's nursing home have a social worker who can advise regarding paperwork?

At a retirement seminar, the speaker (a very competent and ethical financial advisor) told the story of when he brought his mother's POA form into the bank, and the bank's response was, "We can't honor this. She has to sign our forms."

He said, "OK, give me your forms. She's in the car. I'll just bring them out to her to sign." Which he did. Wink, wink.

That was then. A lot of places now require notaries. Which is a lesson to everyone to get stuff done sooner rather than later, for many reasons; but unfortunately this doesn't help OP.

As an aside, my pet peeve (well, one of many) is how easy it is for scammers and unscrupulous family members and caregivers to exploit the elderly, but how hard it is for well-intentioned family members to get anything done.
