During WW1, the Germans actually bombed London, using airships(I suppose these would have been dirigibles) and later- bombers.

A total of 1413 were killed.
After the first daylight bombing raid in 1917, a vigilante mob attacked people and places in London with German sounding names.

Heretofore known as “the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha” (German bombers were called “Gothas” after their manufacturer), the British Royal Family hastily rechristened itself as the House of Windsor
