This year is the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. A few months prior another battle occurred in Leyte Gulf. It was the last great fleet on fleet engagement in history.

A new book is out on Leyte Gulf now by Thomas Cutler and titled "The Battle of Leyte Gulf at 75". It is an anthology published by the Naval Institute Press. Past memoirs from Halsey and Vice Admiral Jesse Oldendorf about the battle are in the book.

Some of you read "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", a fine book on one critical aspect of the overall battle. The author of that book provides a post-script essay "The Tin Can Sailors Are Gone".

One may come to the conclusion the book is too esoteric for the general reader, however the author of the book review says otherwise. I ordered the book because of my former professional interest and having navigated the waters in the late 80s.

I still can't fathom why Hollywood has yet to consider a project based on "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors". A truly heroic story.

PS My apologies for the two OT posts recently. I promise to get back to on topic posts.
