I need a little help with a question that has come up in a class I am taking. Here in Hawaii retirees do not need to pay income tax on pension, SS benefits etc. The forms don't even have the space for it. I am trying to argue that retirees SHOULD in fact pay since they make use of a lot of the same benefits as I do.

Can any of you point to any valid arguments I may be able to dig up on the web to expand on my idea?

Thanks a lot you guys
and take care!

Hath not a retired person eyes? hath not a retired person hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a working person is? If you prick them, do they not bleed? if you tickle them, do they not laugh? if you poison them, do they not die? and if you wrong them...

Hm, I guess I should stop there.

(For the unlettered, this is a famous speech from The Merchant of Venice.)
