Most indices give companies weights proportional to their (float-adjusted) market cap. Ben Graham advocated looking at total revenue (sales) to choose "leading enterprises" that defensive investors could buy and hold without knowing much about stocks.
In modern times it does not make much sense to compare the revenue of a retailer like Wal-Mart or Amazon with that of a software company with very high net margins.
But, it may be instructive (or just fun) to compare companies based on their earnings.
Below is a table of the first 25 top-earners, based on the average of the last 5 years' earnings. Figures are not completely comparable since they are based on annual reports, so some are more stale than others.
(Also, this is very OT since I don't give data for Berkshire Hathaway itself!)
