I'm a new father living in (and paying taxes to) Maryland, looking at 529 savings plans. A coworker suggested that I sign up for Virginia's savings plan instead of Maryland's... that it was worth it to give up the Maryland state tax break for Virginia's plan with lower fees and historically better returns. I know I can use the money for any college in any state regardless of which state's plan I invest in.

Any opinions or advise on what I should do here? Does it make sense to invest in another state's plan? Can anyone from Maryland tell me if our state's plan is really that bad?
