DECATUR, Nov 04, 2011 (Herald & Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Despite an array of challenges that could stretch into the next year and beyond, Archer Daniels Midland Co. shareholders were told Thursday that the company expects to continue performing well.

Patricia Woertz, the company's chairman, president and CEO, said during its annual meeting of stockholders that ADM produced $2 billion in earnings, or $3.13 per share, during the past fiscal year.

"We have a strong balance sheet, and we are confident that we have a strong foundation to build long-term growth for our company," Woertz said.

ADM's performance was tested by volatile and complex conditions, including erratic and destructive weather, along with economic and political unrest around the world, Woertz said. But the company's long-term outlook remains optimistic, she said.
