Yeah, it's exactly what it sounds like. The local TigerDirect store hosted a PC building race, part of a charity competition they're doing in multiple cities. Fastest to assemble the PC gets $500 in store credit, a $500 charity donation in their name, and a trip to Las Vegas for the national competition. 2nd and 3rd get $250 and $100, respectively.

It was free, so naturally I signed up. I've built my share of PCs, so why not give it a go. They had a group of Lenovo desktops, from which they removed the drives, memory, video card, power supply, and cables. You had to put it together, using all the screws, close up the case, and hook up the peripherals. Then boot to windows (about a minute) and acquire an ip to establish your time.

I was in the first of two heats, and placed 2nd with a time of 5:02 (winner was 4:3x). I lost some time struggling to get the power supply in place. No chance at Vegas, but possibly $250. Unfortunately, the organizers let the 2nd heat watch and learn while we did the assembly, and they were faster. I think they had 3 guys come in under 4:30, with the overall winner in 3:50 (crazy).

Pretty fun competition. Went home with a little goodie bag, PC toolkit, and a couple of t-shirts.
