Penny ~

It's easier to relate to and respect people who are open and honest about themselves, so don't worry -- it works for parents and kid, too. As a reverse example, my parents hid everything, but what I was able to figure out by watching and listening to them led me to the truth -- my folks were making terrible decisions. Looking back with the knowledge of an adult and a new Fool, I see that I was more right than I knew. Respecting them is something I have to either work on or fake. I have a hard time deciding sometimes, and I'm sure I'm not very good at faking it. I have often mentioned this, but I just get lies and half-truths or the conversation is redirected. I didn't get to know my father even though we lived together until I moved out at 18. I'm beginning to resign myself to the fact that Mom is a lost cause. I've stopped trying to get to know her.

You have company...
