People now don't even care to explore their companion on the other side of the table.

Lately, when we go to a restaurant, I've begun watching tables where at least three or four folks are seated. INVARIABLY, at least two, if not everyone, will have their nose in their 'smartphone'. Can't be bothered with catching up with their friends sitting right across from them.

Too ironic. (Why even go out with other folks? Just go sit in a darkened corner somewhere and keep up with your little world away from where you are right now.)
