You are absolutely right - modern switching supplies can easily handle this gap. There are two issues:

1) Functional: The double conversion type completely isolate the load from the line and provide flat voltage regulation.

2) Non-functional: It bugs me that a leading manufacturer has been using misleading labeling for decades (uninterruptable is, well, uninterruptable as in Uninterruptable Power Supply rather than UPS as in "keeping something up"). Just a private gripe as it seems that nobody really cares.
