I was chatting with a co-worker this afternoon and he suggested that I start planning for next year's vacation, now. I haven't taken a "real" vacation in many years, usually ending up staying home to clean, eat ice cream, etc.

I mentioned that I love the idea of going away, but don't want to leave the city. My apartment and neighborhood is a noisy, aggravating dump, though, and I can't stand the idea of staying there for summertime again. I also really want to just improve my quality of life, even if it's only a few weeks or so. He suggested that I start looking around for summer sublets, people who leave the city for several weeks or months at a time and rent their place. It is cheaper than a hotel, yet very comfortable, without special amenities like maid service, etc. It sounds ideal.

Has anybody ever done this with any level of success? I would look for places not necessarily in Manhattan, but surrounding boroughs, too. I'd just like to be in a lovely place, such as a brownstone, townhouse, private home, etc.

If you have other relatively cheap (LBYM) summer ideas, please let me know!
