Mattel Inc., the world's largest toy maker by sales, suffered a dismal holiday season with fourth-quarter sales down 10% in North America on poor results for its Barbie dolls and Fisher-Price toys.

The surprise decline shows Mattel giving up a lot of ground in the U.S., the largest and most profitable toy market in the world. Overall toy sales in the U.S. dropped just 1% in the fourth quarter, according to market research firm NPD...
