Dem, GOP heavyweights launch ballot drive to decide presidency by popular vote

LANSING — Two prominent political operatives — one a Democrat and one a Republican — announced Monday they are launching a ballot drive to have Michigan join a movement among states to have the presidency decided by the nationwide popular vote.

If enough states sign onto the plan, the U.S. would keep the electoral college system, but the presidential candidate who wins the nationwide popular vote would be guaranteed the White House.
