The purpose of this portfolio is to determine whether 250 well-chosen stocks -- long and short -- will at some point in time over the next 365 days (after it was picked) outperform the S&P 500 index by more than five percentage points. The goal is to see whether the practice of locking in a 5% gain will outweigh the risk of being exposed to mounting losses on the positions that are open. The decision rules for the portfolio are:

- sell a position as soon as it posts a 5% or more advantage over the S&P 500

- sell a position if it ever appears that it will not be able to outperform the S&P 500 by the forecast end date.

You can see that, so far, well more than half of all selections presented the opportunity for such a gain.
