Silly me, I thought it was supposed to be: of the people, by the people, for the people....then it morphed into of the money, by the money, for the money....and now is morphing again into of the hackers, by the hackers and for the hackers.

We do have the government we deserve.

I sincerely hope that somehow Peter Navarro's influence in Washington, D.C. can be stopped. If not, he may be the most dangerous economist whose ideas ever gained credence with powerful leaders since Karl Marx.

Given the "best brains he has picked, including Kudlow, I'm surprised that the policies seem so startling to you. You pick a P T Barnum and you expect an opera?

Don't blame me for other people's behavior. The Bernie Bro's and I contributed nothing to the current situation. It was decided at the ballot box by your fellow citizens, and my fellow citizens - whom neither you nor I could influence sufficiently to make a difference in the electoral college.

Navarro, on the other hand, was a creation of 1990's resentment politics - and he's the great danger now in that he controls the beast. Frankly, I find resentment to be counterproductive, since it causes people to act against their own best interest. Navarro is a case in point.

The current US vs. China fight involves an America like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Navarro is Master Blaster sitting on the big orange man's shoulders and controlling him.

I'm just ready for this fourth turning to be over.

Oh, sir, that is a slur on a P T Barnum, a great, albeit complicated man; a man with, yes, a staggering genius for flimflam, but 'twas flimflam combined with a brilliant disciplined creativity, and a generous and often ethical spirit.

As to opera, will, he it was he who brought to our shores

>>>>>Jenny Lind<<<<<<

arguably the first truly great opera voice heard in America, and one that certainly caused the greatest mania.

David fb,

You are one of the most brilliant (and generous with your knowledge) persons I have ever known. Thank you for reminding me of a wonderful historical tidbit I long ago forgot.

I was aware of Jenny Lind's famous voice, but I never realized that it was she who made my childhood bed famous, as well.

Jenny Lind, also known as the Swedish Nightingale, was an immensely popular Swedish singer who made her American debut in 1851. P.T. Barnum promoted her American tour, and to create buzz he made a ‘Jenny Lind’ brand. ‘Jenny Lind’ products included Jenny Lind hats and gloves, Jenny Lind tobacco, and, the subject of today’s post, Jenny Lind furniture. [Emphasis added.]

It seems that Jenny Lind was able to do for Victorian-era products exactly what Kim Kardashian and her siblings have done today.

If your OK with that memory of your public and private expressions of how you would vote during the election cycle, so be it....

We have the government we deserve....2.8 million more voted for the other candidate and 18 spy agencies agree that there was outside meddling favoring the candidate you chose....good company...

Again, it doesn't matter now, we have the government we deserve and apparently will continue to get the governments other countries or powers want us to have as nothing much is being done to prevent it from becoming business as usual.

Jenny Lind furniture!!

Hound, I had no idea.

Many thanks. I might have to hunt one down. I wonder, did her tour hit Mexico?

We have no recordings of the greats of that earlier era, but here is one of my favorite 78 recordings, 1905, of the beautiful Adelina Patti singing Mozart's voi che sapete. She knew Lind and was very fond of her. Of course, the recording cannot handle intensity, and so she is being very controlled, but notice the extraordinarily beautiful phrasing, finesse, and delicacy -- modern operatic technique has almost no place for such.

And PolymerMom too? Lucky you both, as they are wonderful aesthetic examples to grow up with.

Barnum was an actual hardworking and hard-sweating genius, and an American original.

Pos, silly question but why would the person who benefited most by the "outside meddling" do anything to change it? Well I suppose if moral values were involved ... but of course that's not an issue.
