Powell flirted with a run for the presidency. He spoke at the 1996 Republican convention, where he said:

“You all know that I believe in a woman’s right to choose, and I strongly believe in affirmative action,” Powell told the delegates. “The Hispanic immigrant who becomes a citizen yesterday must be as precious to us as a Mayflower descendant.”

There was some applause from the floor, but there were also some loud boos.


Colin Powell decided against running.
