Probably too late, but unless the IFA is a FEE ONLY Planner from The Garrett Planning Network or from, they're probably doing what's most right for them & may be OK for you.

So find a planner from one of those mentioned above. If the IFA says their advice is free I would very cautious & inquire where «all» his/her salary, commissions, fees received for load funds if you're talking about mutual funds. If so I would look to Vanguard, Fidelity or TRowePrice NO-LOAD Index MF's or commission free index ETF's.

I tend to prefer Garrett as they'll work hourly. Which is nice for yearly or bi-yearly rebalancing.

For individual stocks you're in the right place @ Stock Advisor. Or perhaps try a 30 day free trial of Rule Your Retirement that might be more appropriate for managing a 401 k to the extent permitted by the plan administrator. Good luck.
