My Story

I have 18 years of experience with investing, beginning at the age of 12 when my father taught me about investing and the power of compounding. I invested my life savings in tech stocks right before the Nasdaq bubble burst and learned a valuable lesson about diversification and the importance of valuation. Since that time I’ve dabbled in day trading, commodities, currency and speculative options. I’ve made and lost several fortunes and learned very valuable lessons about what works (long-term buy and hold) and what doesn’t (get rich quick speculation). I received my Undergrad in Economics (with an emphasis on pre-medicine) from the University of Minnesota. Afterwards I joined the US Army. I met my wife while stationed in Maryland and we recently moved to our farm in Alabama. I am very family oriented and our farm is located within a quarter mile of her grandparents, parents and aunt and uncle. It is the ideal location to start and raise a family. Deciding to switch careers from medicine to investmenting has not been an easy choice. However, I’m blessed to have a very loving and supportive wife who convinced me that I should take a risk and chase my dream. This has always been to write for and eventually work at the Motley Fool. I’m eager to bring my rich experience to the Motley Fool and to help your readers learn from both my successes and failures.
