My Story

I began investing in 1999 after reading "The Motley Fool Investment Guide". I started with the "Foolish Four" and some tech stocks recommended by a coworker. After the tech stock bubble popped in 2001 and the Foolish 4 was discredited, I lost around half of my early portfolio value. I started over, and now I own many companies from around the Fool universe. I joined Stock Advisor in 2006 and have branched out to other newsletters and services from there. At one time, I was a freelance writer for the free part of the Motley Fool website and a Ticker Guide for Berkshire Hathaway within Stock Advisor. The name Gordogato means (loosely) "Fat Cat" in Spanish, and it has double meaning :1) I hope to be one of those rich Fat Cats everyone is always talking about, and 2) My cat used to be a bit heavy, and got the nickname "Gordo Gato". I started using Gordogato as an avatar name for online games, and then started using it here as well.

How I Invest

My non-retirement portfolio is 100% stocks (all recommendations of various Fool newsletters). I outsource the research to Fool analysts and then pick and choose the recommendations that speak to me. I typically own 50-70 stocks and use the Foolish Community to help me keep an eye on them all. My retirement portfolio is about 90% in my 401k, which is made up of of simple, low-cost index funds. I also have a Roth IRA, which is a mix of Foolish stocks, ETFs, and target date mutual funds.
