Two Inspiring Educators

When I was a kid, I was inspired by two amazing teachers. One taught English; the other social studies. My social studies teacher instilled in me a great love of the stock market. My English teacher taught me how to craft prose to create vivid mental images in the minds of readers…instead of antiseptically employing words that would merely label something. When I was twelve, the social studies teacher assigned a project intended to teach the value of money. We were to pick a stock from the financial pages of the newspaper and follow it over the course of the year. The pupil whose “investment” had the highest rate of return would be declared the winner. I selected McDonald's because I loved their cheeseburgers and fries. And, as it turns out, in that particular year, McDonald's opened so many new stores that its earnings momentum accelerated at an astonishing pace. The stock more than doubled in value. I won the contest. It was at that moment, that I knew I was a stock picking genius destined for Wall Street.

How I Invest

Bottom up, data driven, thematic approach to find long-term secular trends that I believe will benefit certain sectors. Then, I look for stocks that are leaders in their industries and try to not pay too much for them. Then, I hold on for as long as those criteria remain in place. I take concentrated positions and don't attempt to replicate the proportional weighting of the S&P 500.
