What's the best advice you've ever received?

Don't go into the Military (college friends). Don't marry her (military friends). Don't go to a liberal arts college (family friends). Don't major in History (job focused friends). Don't concentrate your portfolio (Motley Fool posters). Sell Berkshire Hathaway (Motley Fool posters). Buy an index fund instead of doing it on your own (Motley Fool posters). Hire a money manager (Motley Fool posters). Buy Worldcom (broker)... Go to church (many). Don't smoke cigars (neighbor)... And each time I received such "advice" I concluded that it was not intelligent, short sighted, or not rational - why I can't say. I realized as a young man that unless one thinks it through and does it on their own that one would ALWAYS be dependent on the external. A form of slavery....
